Common data element (CDE)
A common data element (CDE) refers to a data element that is common to multiple data sets across different studies, surveys, or registries. The intentional use of CDEs improves data quality and promotes data sharing. For example, in order to collect participtants’ race as a CDE, studies must use the same definition of race, ask the question about participants’ race in the same way, and provide the same answer choices as other studies.
