RNA transcript
« Back to Glossary Index

An RNA transcript is the RNA strand that is produced when a gene is transcribed. Precursor mRNA (pre-RNA) is one type of RNA transcript. Pre-mRNA is processed into mature mRNA which in turn is translated into a protein. Not all genes, and thus not all RNA transcripts, code for proteins; others are involved in protein synthesis, post-transcriptional modification, DNA replication, or regulate genes.
