Newborn screening is a set of tests performed on newborns, usually before they leave the hospital. The exact tests perform vary somewhat by state. However, in every state, the tests screen for at least 30 genetic disorders, hearing impairment, and congenital heart defects.
If a newborn screening test is positive, further tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis. With early diagnosis, treatment for the conditions identified in newborn screening can begin right away, before serious problems can occur or become permanent.
