Placebo effect
« Back to Glossary IndexA placebo effect occurs when a person reports having a positive (or negative response (whether physical or emotional) that cannot be attributed to properties of the “therapy” being given but rather is due to the person’s expectation that the “therapy” will produce a certain effect. More simply, the placebo effect is due to the power of suggestion. The therapy causing a placebo effect may be a placebo or sham or other control group alternative to the therapy being studied, but may also be the actual therapy being studied.
